Thorsby Prepares for By-Election

March 12 2014
Monday, June 2, set for by-election date

For immediate release…

Thorsby, Alberta: Following the resignations on Monday, March 10 by Katherine Ruhr and Glenn Taylor as Village of Thorsby councillors, the Village of Thorsby is preparing to hold a by-election for the vacant Council positions.

Under Section 165 of the Municipal Government Act, a by-election must be held within 90 days after the vacancy occurs. The by-election date has been set for Monday, June 2, 2014.

“The date has been set for two reasons. First, it gives potential candidates an opportunity to consider and prepare for the by-election. Second, it provides the municipality time to prepare for the vote,” says CAO Jason Gariepy.

Gariepy will serve as returning officer and notices will be placed in local newspaper(s) seeking enumerators to assist with the election. Nomination packages for candidates will be available for pickup from the Village of Thorsby Office on March 25, 2014.

The last time a by-election was held in Thorsby was in 2006 when Councillor Ariss and Councillor Osness submitted their resignations. A by-election was held and two new councillors were elected to fill the vacated positions.
