Council Approves Five-Year Fire Service Agreement

April 9 2014
The Village of Thorsby and Leduc County agreed to a five-year contract to provide fire services to Thorsby and the surrounding rural areas. The agreement follows a month of negotiation between the municipalities to provide fire suppression, rescue services, dangerous goods awareness, and emergency public safety.

Rick Thomas, General Manager of Community Services in Leduc County, provided a detailed overview of the agreement, including the following highlights:
  • The total annual operating and maintenance costs and revenues will be shared between the Village and the County with the Village paying 25 per cent and the County 75 per cent. All capital expenditures over $5,000 shall be agreed jointly between the parties.
  • A monthly activity report will be provided to the Village, including an overview of emergency incidents, training, and condition of equipment and fire apparatus.
  • The agreement shall be for five-years; however, it will be reviewed by the Village and County in March 2015 to assess effectiveness.

Thorsby CAO Jason Gariepy said, “I have every confidence in Leduc County to manage the day-to-day operations of the Thorsby and District Fire Department. We have already seen progress in recruitment activities and the fire department has been responding to calls in the community.”
