Protect Your Pets This Winter!
Did you know? Under the Alberta Animal Protection Act, it’s illegal to leave pets exposed to extreme weather conditions without proper shelter, warmth, and care. Letting animals suffer in the cold isn’t just cruel—it’s against the law.
Common Risks to Pets Left in the Cold:
Frostbite: Ears, paws, and tails are especially vulnerable.
Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can lead to life-threatening conditions.
Injury from Cold Surfaces: Ice, snow, and frozen pavement can damage paw pads.
Dehydration: Water bowls can freeze, leaving pets without access to fresh water.
What Does the Law Say?
The Alberta Animal Protection Act states:
- Pets must have adequate shelter, food, and water at all times.
- Leaving pets outside in extreme cold for long durations may result in fines or animal seizure.
Seizure of Animals in Distress
Nobody knows your pet better than you—except a veterinarian. If a Community Peace Officer and veterinarian confirm that an animal is in distress and we are unable to contact the owner, your animal may be seized under the Animal Protection Act to end its suffering.
This is why it’s important to register your pets with the Town of Thorsby! Proper registration ensures we can contact you quickly in case of emergencies.
What To Do If You See an Animal in Distress:
Report it immediately:

Community Peace Officer: 780-940-9077
How You Can Help:
Bring pets indoors during extreme weather. A cozy blanket and a warm space can make all the difference.
Provide proper shelter if your pet must stay outside: insulated, raised off the ground, and protected from wind and snow.
Monitor outdoor time—keep walks and playtime short in freezing temperatures.
Let’s work together to keep our furry friends safe and happy this winter. They rely on us to protect them from the elements!
